phlyMail 4 Alpha released

Postby mso » 07.10.2007 23:48

Finally and after much more time consumed than expected: We have just released phlyMail 4 alpha (Build ID 3.09.00).

Since most of the new functionality is part of Personal Edition and MessageCenter we did not release a Lite build of it.
The Alpha is available in the customer service area under "Downloads" and marked accordingly.

Please pay attention:

- do a clean install of the Alpha, never ever copy it over your running 3.x installation!
- There's still huge problems with Internet Explorer, we recommend using Firefox for your tests
- Some of the modules don't check the permissions set for a specific user, namely when writing new mails and in the files manager
- Many of the features planned for the final version 4 are not yet or not fully implemented
- Do NOT use the alpha in a production environment! This one is for testing only!

A short index of some of the new functions:

complete groups management
- Using the system groups you can mimic even complex organisation structures
- Groups can be nested arbitrarily
- Users can be assigned to an arbitrary amount of groups
- Every group can be assigned individual permissions
- New sub groups inherit the permissions of their parent groups, until the get their own permissions

extensive permission management
Every module brings its own set of permissions, which can be set for every group individually. The final version 4 will allow to do this for each user, too. User permissions overwrite group permissions. A user always has the sum of the permissions of all the group (s)he is assigned to.

Shares
User can share folders with other users or groups of users. Currently these are read-only. With the final version 4 shares will have individual write and read permissions. It's only possible to share folders (or items later on) with users, who are in any of your groups or with groups, you are assigned to.
For the alpha shares have been implemented for the email handler.
We wish to have "Public folders" available with the final version 4, these are a special form of shares.

Improved calendar handler
The calendar now almost fully implements the iCal (or vCal) format when it comes to importing and exporting of appointments. Only importing lacks some details in the interpretation of repetition rules.
Additionally there's now much more types of events, namely those from RFC 2445.

Further general improvements
- IMAP functionality now without the need for PHP's IMAP extension
- The folder to show after login can now be configured
- folders in the email handler can nwo be hidden by the user
- improved session security through the use of a session cookie (can be activated by an admin)
- Drag & drop (right now just for copying / moving mails to another folder)
- more improvements in the frontend to allow easier future enhancements
- and much more
