Saving Templates and Drafts

Postby HumbleScholar » 16.06.2011 02:30

Hi Mattheas, how are you?
I'm using templates and drafts a lot and I often need to amend them.
Problem is, I can't just open a template, change it and save it back.
I'm having to use 'edit as new', save it as a template under a different name and delete the original -every time...
Is there any chance we could have a 'save' button that would simply update the existing message?
Hope you're well,
Alik

Regarding Templates, there's possibly a niftier solution to your problem, which is available right now - instead of a future release.

phlyMail comes with a feature we call "boiler plates", which allows you to store text (and HTML) snippets of arbitrary length and complexity. You can organize these in nested groups and give them names to easily identify them.
You can get to the management interface through Settings > Boiler plates. When editing an email, just click on "Boilerplates" in the button bar, which makes the plates list fly out to the left of the editor area.

Dos this suffice as a Templates replacement to you?

Thanks, Matthias,
The way boilerplates are implemented is a great idea for creating and using templates - well done!
The only complaint is that the HTML functionality is severely limited in the editor.
BTW, what is the difference between boilerplates and templates? Why do we have a 'save as a template' at all?
Anyway, there's still a need to be a 'save' option for changing the existing drafts and templates in addition to 'save as new'.
I use drafts and templates for maintaining various lists - packing, my domains, party attendees, etc.
As you can imagine, some of these lists are updated often and it's a pain in the current setup without a 'save' option.
It would be great if you found the time to implement this option.
Cheers,

Actually the "Save" functionality is on the ToDo list already. I intend to replace the "save as new" with "save", although technically speaking it will be more like "Save as new and remove the older instance". Unfortunately I don't know, when I will manage to implement that feature.

SaveAsNew is a useful function to have when you want to save another instance of the same template slightly modified.
Since you already have it, why not leave it in place? Maybe just add the 'save' option?
Oh and, I'm sure you wouldn't miss it but I'll mention this just in case, when saving a message could you please make sure it saves in the same folder, as opposed to the default folder for templates or lists? Cos right now when we save as new it defaults to the root.
Thanks, Mattheas, whenever you get to it is good enough - it has to be :-)
